Sunday, September 18

Another day, another museum .....

Actually, after a slightly more relaxed morning, we took off in different directions.  Kathy went to visit the wax museum and I would, of course, have joined her had I known that Brad Pitt and George Clooney were to involved.  Alas, I missed my chance.

Apparently, Kathy then, on my recommendation, tried to get to Sacre-Couer, the famous church in the north of Paris - whose dome is only second highest to the Eiffel Tower.  Anyway, she claims that she tried to get there but only went further away - a claim I suspect has to do with the hill that has to be climbed to get to the church!  Kathy didn't break under cross examination so maybe she was just confused ....

For my part, I went grocery shopping.  But not just any old grocery shopping - this was Sunday shopping on the market on the fabled rue de Mouffetard, in the Jardin des Plantes Quarter, one of the oldest street markets in Paris.  Julia Child shopped here and the film Julie and Julia was partially shot here.  If you want further name dropping, Ernest Hemingway hung out around here.  I bought some wonderful food for our dinner tonight, including a poulet (chicken) and vegetables (potatoes, corn, peas, tomatoes, etc.)

Then off to a recommendation of my friend about Poulain, a famour bakery shop which just opened a shop in the Marais  at 38 rue Debellemye - for a baguette (of course) and dessert for our dinner.

Kathy returned from her wax museum and then we set off - to the world famous Pompidou Centre - Paris' museum of modern art.  We toured the modern (permanent) collection - which of course included the usual Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Kandinsky, to name a few.  Some of the paintings were quite controversial - let alone what the crowd must have thought back in the early 1900s.

We then toured the contemporary collection - which was interesting to say the least!  My favourite was the collection of light bulbs and the collage of wine bottle caps (about 12' x 20') - just thing of the wine consumed!!!

Kathy is pictured here with her personal favourites - "THEEVERYMANY" (that's her in the bottom left of the picture) and a sofa that she decided is way better than the one she just bought (called "Sofa Living Structure").

She was so enthralled with the collection that she decided to buy some similar items.  Roddy, don't worry - she is having these items shipped home and they should be occupying your living and dining room shortly - just note that there will not be any room to entertain in those rooms after installation.

Since it was Sunday, we again decided to go to church - St. Eustache this time, which is considered one of Paris' loveliest churches - with lovely pillars and columns and stained glass windows.  Moliere is buried here.  Pictured below is a modern work of art in the square just next to the church - which unfortunately, has some graffiti on it - but seems to be the favourite climbing place for les enfants de Paris!!

Well, it was another day of walking which led us back home - and I couldn't resist thinking about my baby - Morgan - who is not so much a baby anymore since she turned 19 on August 30 - when I walked by this ....

I hope she is doing OK at Western - the little rat has not sent me one email since I've arrived in Paris!!!  She is living with some friends in London so I've hoping to get some news on how school is going and how the new living arrangements have turned out.

Dinner tonight was fabulous, if I do say so myself - Julia would be proud.  I have finally figured out how to work this fancy stove.  There was almost a crisis when I discovered before dinner that we were out of wine!!  And all of the supermarkets were closed this Sunday evening!!   I did manage to find a small market who had a lovely Medoc for about 8 euros ($11) so we were saved.  I keep thinking that what with all the walking and cycling my pants should be almost falling off my body, but somehow that hasn't happened - must have something to do with the baguettes, cheese and wine that I am enjoying - in moderation of course!
